I have come into a DNA 1409-5 and am very excited, but the line I have I just can’t cast. I am wondering if you have any suggestions? I live in the Pacific Northwest and target steelhead, but also want to go after tiger muskie that live in the lake where I reside. Thank you in advance, Mike
Tom McCoy answers: Mike, congratulations on coming into one of the all-time great, iconic rods here in the PNW, a true legend. The first line that comes to mind is a 600 grain Rage from Airflo. It would allow you to use floating tips, modest weight sink tips or polyleaders as conditions dictate, and it is conducive to both sustained anchor and touch & go casts. If you want to test drive a Rage, or a number of other lines for that matter, give Poppy at the Red Shed Fly Shop a call and he’ll send one to you to try with no obligation to purchase. And, it just so happens that this exact model is one of his all-time favorite rods! Best, Tom McCoy

Bill Gallogly asks: I own a 15′, 10wt, 5 piece T&T. I have been casting a Rio Intouch Longhead Spey 9/10 765 gr. Is there a better line to turn over a heavy tip (t-14) and big intruder with dumbbell eyes? Am I looking for a heavier, longer skagit or something else? Fishing the Skeena and its tributaries. Many thanks!
I own a T&T 1307. Puchased the rod new about ten years ago. Clearly, an amazing rod. Now there are may new lines on the market. Could you give me suggestions as to line weight for the Nextcast Zone, the Airflow Rage and any other new line on the market you really like. I swing flies for Steelhead on the Klickitat, Grande Ronde, Deschutes and the Clearwater. Also planning to start “skating” dries again. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank You, Gary
